SMART Recovery® is a secular, science based program similar to the most effective methods for resolving emotional and behavioral problems. SMART Recovery® tools and training are drawn from the fields of Rational Behavioral Therapy (REBT, developed by Albert Ellis, Ph.D.) and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT). SMART Recovery® uses a variety of ideas, tools, and techniques from CBT and REBT which focus on behavioral changes. There are many levels of addictive behaviors, but when the negative consequences of addiction outweigh the short-term gratifications, the benefits of changing the addictive behavior become clear. People who succeed in changing addictive behavior have learned and used the following four effective strategies: maintaining motivation; coping with recurring thoughts and urges; thinking rationally;and living a balanced life. In fact, each person's success depends on their own commitment to change. SMART Recovery® doesn't suggest a lifetime commitment to meetings. People who are satisfied the positive changes that they have made, and who can handle life's problems rationally, are encouraged to pursue their other goals, and to enjoy the real satisfaction that life offers. |
